New works of music, theatre, and musical theatre.

As an actor, composer, sound designer, writer, director, teaching artist, and multi-instrumentalist, Alex Bechtel’s work has appeared on the stages of most Philadelphia theatre companies.  Recent credits include: Jennifer Kidwell & Scott Sheppard’s The Underground Railroad Game, and Anisa George’s Holden (Sound Design), Arden Theatre Company’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival’s Two Gents, Henry V, Taming of the Shrew, As You Like It, and Twelfth Night (Original Music), and Lightning Rod Special’s The Appointment (Original Music/Lyrics). Bechtel is a graduate of The Pig Iron School for Advanced Performance Training (Inaugural Class, 2013) and The University of the Arts (BFA 2008). Bechtel has received Barrymore Awards for Outstanding Music Direction for his work on The Walnut St Theatre’s production of My Way, Outstanding Ensemble of a Musical for his performance in Theatre Horizon’s Into the Woods, Outstanding Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for The Arden’s The Light Princess, and Outstanding Original Music for The Light Princess. In 2015, he was awarded an Independence Fellowship in the Arts to engage in a one-on-one creative intensive with Kentucky-based New Music composer Rachel Grimes on new approaches to the use of music in theatre.  Bechtel was a 2015 and 2016 Finalist for the F. Otto Haas Award for Outstanding Philadelphia Emerging Theatre Artist.  He is the co-creator of the absurdist devised comedy Jeff Coon and Ben Dibble Must Die, co-creator of the live comedy variety show The Bech/Doh Sketch/Show, composer/lyricist of Sleeping Beauty: A Musical Panto at People’s Light and Theatre Company, composer/original cast member of The Light Princess at The Arden Theatre Company, and creator/composer of The West, Philadelphia Nocturne, and Cheer Up, Dostoevsky. His music has been featured on NPR’s ‘Newsworks’ on WHYY, and in many short films and cartoons. Bechtel is now a member of the theatre faculty at his alma mater, University of the Arts, and is currently in development on several new plays and musicals.
